Sworn translation in l'Alfàs del Pi

Every 17 May, l'Alfàs del Pi wakes up draped in Norwegian flags: the Norwegian Constitution Day parade has been marching through its streets for over half a century, two and a half thousand kilometres from Oslo. It is no postcard for tourists. This Marina Baixa town, tucked between Benidorm and Altea, is home to one of the largest Norwegian communities outside Norway —with its own school since 1972, a church in l'Albir and even the only volunteer centre Norway runs beyond its borders— and, according to the INE municipal register, more than six out of ten residents are foreign nationals, among the highest shares in Spain. The flip side of that life between two countries is less photogenic: pension certificates, wills, deeds and birth certificates that the Spanish authorities will not accept while they remain in English, German or French. Before they reach the notary, the Civil Registry or the Social Security, those documents need a sworn translation into Spanish.
