Spain Digital Nomad Visa in Madrid: documents, appointment and particulars

How to apply for the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) in Madrid in 2026: financial requirements, documents to apostille and translate, UGE-CE appointment and Madrid-specific particulars.

Madrid concentrates Spain's largest volume of Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) applications. The reason is the mix of international corporate hub —Google, Amazon, Microsoft, J.P. Morgan, McKinsey, IBM and dozens of multinationals with European HQ in the capital— and professionals arriving to work remotely from the UK, US, Germany, Netherlands and the Nordics. This guide explains the 2026 DNV process in Madrid, the documents to apostille and translate, and the city's own particulars.

The DNV in a nutshell

Spain's Digital Nomad Visa was created by Law 28/2022, of 21 December, promoting the emerging-companies ecosystem (Startups Act). It allows residing and working legally in Spain for foreign companies (without a Spanish employment contract) or as an international freelancer. It is the most used option for digital nomads, remote professionals and international freelancers.

Key differences vs other visas:

  • NLV (non-lucrative): forbids working for a Spanish company and doesn't require remote professional activity — fits retirees with passive income.
  • DNV: allows remote work for foreign companies or international freelance, but not for a Spanish company.
  • Golden visa: discontinued/transforming. Required real-estate investment > €500,000.

2026 financial requirements

Current Immigration criterion for the DNV:

  • Main applicant: minimum income of 200% of the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI) in force. In 2026 this equals roughly €2,762/month / €33,144/year.
  • For spouse or partner: +75% SMI = ~€1,036/month (€12,432/year).
  • Per dependent child: +25% SMI = ~€345/month (€4,144/year).

A family of four (applicant + spouse + 2 children) must demonstrate ~€54,000/year available.

Documents to provide — consular package or from within Spain

Identity

  • Passport valid at least 6 months.
  • Application form (MITES form) and passport-size photos.

Criminal record

  • Certificate from the country (or countries) of residence over the last 5 years.
  • Apostille by the competent body of the issuing country.
  • Sworn translation into Spanish by a MAEC-accredited translator.

For the most common origins in Madrid:

  • FBI Identity History Summary (US) — apostille by the federal Department of State.
  • ACRO Police Certificate (UK) — apostille by FCDO Milton Keynes.
  • French B3no apostille (EU Reg 2016/1191).
  • Führungszeugnis (Germany), Verklaring Omtrent het Gedrag (Netherlands), Casellario Giudiziale (Italy)…

Health

  • Medical certificate with the exact mention of the International Health Regulations 2005 (IHR-2005).
  • Apostille from the issuing country (where applicable).
  • Sworn translation into Spanish. Provider and exact format details in the medical certificate technical sheet.
  • Private health insurance with full coverage, no co-pays, no waiting periods, authorized in Spain.

Professional activity (the key DNV proof)

  • If working for foreign company: employment contract (minimum 3 months' seniority with the same company or client at application) + employer letter authorizing remote work from Spain.
  • If international freelance: contracts with several clients (at least one from outside Spain), proof of continuous activity and billing.
  • In both cases: the company or clients must have operated ≥1 year.
  • University degree (bachelor's or equivalent) OR demonstrable professional experience of at least 3 years in the sector.

Financial means

  • Bank statements, tax returns from country of origin (1040 US, SA302 UK, avis d'imposition FR, etc.).
  • Income proofs from the professional activity.

Madrid accommodation

  • Rental contract in Madrid or deed if you've bought.
  • Padrón if managed from Spain (not mandatory before visa).

The two application routes

Route A — Application at the Spanish consulate in your country

Traditional. After approval, you arrive in Spain with a 1-year visa and apply for the TIE at Immigration within 30 days of entry.

Route B — Application from within Spain (faster)

The Startups Act created an express route: apply directly from Spain for the DNV residence authorization before the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit (UGE-CE) of the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration. UGE-CE is headquartered in Madrid (Calle José Abascal 39).

UGE-CE timelines: 20 calendar days (much faster than 1-3 months consular). Resolution by positive silence in many cases.

Route B is the most used in Madrid because:

  • No need to travel to country of origin for consular visa.
  • UGE-CE is in the city itself.
  • The timeline is notably shorter.
  • Allows staying in Spain on tourist visa or transitioning from another modality while pending.

Madrid Immigration Office

For subsequent procedures (TIE, renewals, modifications, reunification), the Madrid Immigration Office depends on the Sub-delegation of the Government. Its particulars:

  • Calle García de Paredes, 65 (main office).
  • Prior appointment: the system is highly saturated in Madrid; appointments are released Tuesday and Thursday between 8-10am and run out in minutes.
  • DNV TIE: applied for within 30 days after entering Spain (Route A) or after UGE-CE resolution (Route B).
  • Electronic portal: renewals and modifications can be processed 100% online with digital certificate.

DNV validity and renewals

  • Initial: 3 years (Route B from Spain) or 1 year (Route A from consulate, extendable to 3 years with authorization).
  • Renewal: 2 years + 2 years.
  • After 5 years of continuous legal residence: permanent residence.
  • After 10 years: Spanish citizenship by residence (for countries without dual-nationality treaty: formal renunciation of prior nationality).

Tax advantages: the Beckham regime for DNV

DNV holders can opt into the special tax regime for impatriates (Personal Income Tax Law, commonly "Beckham regime"), which allows taxation as non-resident during the first year + 5 following years:

  • Flat rate of 24% on Spanish income (up to €600,000).
  • No taxation on foreign-source income (except employment).

One of the biggest DNV attractions in Madrid: combined with the cost of living vs London or New York, the tax saving is significant. To opt in, apply within 6 months of Social Security registration, filing form 149.

Common mistakes in Madrid DNV files

  1. Apostilling the FBI background check at state Secretary of State instead of federal Department of State (FBI is federal).
  2. Medical certificate without IHR-2005 mention: many MDs issue generic "fitness to travel" that UGE-CE rejects.
  3. <3 months seniority with current employer: DNV requires minimum 3-month employment or contractual relationship at application.
  4. Employer company with <1 year operating in its jurisdiction.
  5. Not applying for Beckham regime in time (6 months from SS registration).
  6. Applying for TIE after 30 days from entry on Route A: requires re-application.
