Sworn translation French to Spanish: what it is and when you need it
A sworn translation is the official Spanish version of a document originally issued in French. The signature and seal of a translator accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation (MAEC) grant the translation full legal validity before any public administration, court, university, notary or registry in Spain.
This is not a regular translation. It is the only form admitted in official procedures when the original document is written in a language other than Spanish. A professional translation without MAEC accreditation, however technically accurate, is not valid for administrative procedures.
When you need a sworn translation from French
The most common procedures that require a sworn translation of French-language documents are:
- NIE and residency applications for French, Belgian francophone, Swiss francophone and Canadian citizens settling in Spain
- Spanish citizenship applications by residence, which require sworn translations of the casier judiciaire, birth certificate and, where applicable, marriage certificate
- Recognition of university degrees obtained from French, Belgian, Swiss or Canadian universities before the Spanish Ministry of Universities
- Registration of foreign marriages at the Spanish Civil Registry
- Recognition of foreign divorce judgments (including the French jugement de divorce) to update marital status in Spain
- International inheritance proceedings, where there are assets or heirs in both Spain and a French-speaking country
- PACS registration (French civil union) at the Spanish Civil Registry
- International adoptions, where all documentation from the country of origin requires sworn translation
- Contracts and commercial documents between Spanish and French-speaking companies

A note on the Apostille and the European Regulation
Public documents issued in France and other European Union countries are usually covered by EU Regulation 2016/1191, which in many cases removes the need for an Apostille when presented before an administration of another Member State. For the most common documents (birth, marriage, death, criminal record, capacity to marry, etc.), a standardised multilingual form is used to facilitate recognition without an Apostille.
However, some Spanish administrations still request the Apostille even in these cases, and documents from French-speaking countries outside the EU (Switzerland for some purposes, Canada, French-speaking African countries) do require it.

Answers to your questions about sworn translation from French
What is the difference between a Spanish sworn translation and a French "traduction assermentée"?
In Spain, the official term is sworn translation (traducción jurada). It is carried out exclusively by translators accredited by the MAEC and has full legal validity before all Spanish administrations.
France has a parallel system: the traduction assermentée (also called traduction certifiée), carried out by traducteurs experts registered on the lists of French courts of appeal (cours d'appel).
Both systems are equivalent in function, but translations carried out in France for use in Spain must be done by translators accredited by the Spanish MAEC, not by French experts. If a Spanish administration asks you for an "official translation" or "sworn translation", they always mean a sworn translation by a translator accredited by the MAEC.
Does a sworn translation expire?
The sworn translation itself does not expire. What can expire is the original document that has been translated. For example, a casier judiciaire bulletin nº 3 issued by the French authorities is usually valid for 3 months before the Spanish administration. When the original document is no longer valid, the translation that accompanies it also loses its usefulness, not because the translation has expired, but because the original document is no longer useful for the procedure.
To be safe, it is advisable to arrange the sworn translation once you have the recent original document and within its period of validity before the corresponding administration.
Do I need to apostille the document if it comes from France?
For the most common public documents issued in France (birth certificate, marriage certificate, casier judiciaire, capacity to marry, etc.), EU Regulation 2016/1191 allows them to be presented in Spain with a standardised multilingual form, without the need for an Apostille.
However, some Spanish administrations still routinely request an Apostille, especially for nationality procedures or judicial processes. If your document comes from Belgium, Switzerland, Canada or another French-speaking country outside the EU, it does require an Apostille as a general rule.

Can I use the translation for more than one procedure?
Yes. A sworn translation is valid for as many procedures as you need, as long as the original document remains valid. It is not "tied" to a single file. You can submit the same sworn translation of your birth certificate, for example, for the NIE, the civil marriage and the citizenship application, without having to order a new one each time.
It is worth keeping a digital original copy and, if hard copies were delivered, having additional ones to avoid running out of documentation during the procedure.
Is the digital version valid or do I have to provide a paper copy?
Since 2020, sworn translations can be electronically signed with full legal validity, under the European Union eIDAS Regulation. Virtually all Spanish public administrations accept the digital version signed electronically.
However, some administrations still require a hard copy in their in-person procedures or physical registries. To avoid any issues, we always offer the option of adding a printed copy delivered by courier at a small additional cost.

What happens if an administration rejects the sworn translation?
Sworn translations accredited by the MAEC are accepted by all Spanish public administrations. If an administration ever requests clarifications, formal corrections or a specific format, we correct it at no additional cost. It is part of our service commitment.
