Sworn translation for your Spanish student visa
We translate into Spanish, with a MAEC-appointed sworn translator's seal, the documents the consulate or immigration office asks for on a student visa: admission letter, degrees, criminal record and medical certificate. Online, delivered as a signed PDF.
What the student visa is
It's permission to stay in Spain to study, research, train or do an internship. You apply at the Spanish consulate for where you live before travelling, unless you're already here legally and can file from inside the country.
One threshold changes everything, and it's worth knowing before you spend a penny on apostilles: six months.
- Stays of up to six months. Short file. No criminal record certificate, no medical certificate.
- Stays longer than six months. The visa now carries the initial authorisation, and that's when the apostilled criminal record certificate and the medical certificate come in.
If your course runs five months and someone told you to order an FBI check, ask again. It's the single biggest waste of money on this application.
One update not everyone has caught: under Real Decreto 1155/2024, in force since 20 May 2025, students may work up to 30 hours a week while studying, with no separate work permit.
This page isn't a guide to the procedure. For official requirements and deadlines, check your consulate or the Immigration Office. What we solve here is the translation.
What you need to show in 2026
The minimum is 100% of the monthly IPREM, which in 2026 is €600 a month. Bringing family adds €450 for the first dependant and €300 for each one after.
You prove it with bank statements, a scholarship award, a letter from your parents undertaking to support you, or a combination. Anything in another language needs translating, sponsorship letters and proof of relationship included.
Which documents need a sworn translation
- Letter of admission from the institution, where it's in another language. It's usually the document that opens the file.
- Academic transcripts, grades and previous qualifications, when the institution or consulate asks for them.
- Apostilled criminal record certificate, only if the stay exceeds six months. Depending on where you've lived, the FBI Identity History Summary, the UK ACRO certificate or the French bulletin n° 3.
- Medical certificate, likewise only beyond six months, under the 2005 International Health Regulations.
- Proof of funds: statements, scholarship award, parental sponsorship letter.
- Health insurance matching the basic common portfolio of Spain's National Health System, from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain.
- Proof of relationship if family is funding you or coming along: birth certificates, marriage certificate.
The apostille is translated together with the document, inside the same sworn translation. It's a page attached to the original and forms part of it; leave it out and the file arrives incomplete.
How we do it
Upload a scan or a clear photo, choose the language pair — English↔Spanish or French↔Spanish — and see the price immediately, VAT included, with no later adjustment. A translator appointed by the MAEC does the work, then seals, signs and certifies that it faithfully matches the original.
Every translation is printed on official Spanish stamped paper, numbered and bearing the coat of arms, then scanned, so the PDF already shows it, and separately signed with a digital certificate. Need the paper original? We'll send it.
Academic calendars don't negotiate. If enrolment or your consular appointment is close, there's 24-hour delivery and same-day express.
Why us
Because a study file is won on detail: course names and grades carried across exactly, the institution's seals showing, the apostille not left behind. One mistyped name or a grade that doesn't match means doing it again.
We don't advise on the procedure and we don't decide whether you're admitted — that's for the institution and the consulate. What we guarantee is a translation that arrives flawless, on time and in the format you were asked for.
Frequently asked questions
Answers to your questions
Do I need a criminal record and medical certificate for a student visa?
Only if your stay is longer than six months. Up to six months the file is short and neither is required. This is the biggest money-waster on this application: people ordering and apostilling an FBI check for a one-semester course. Check the exact length of your programme first.
How much do I need to show in 2026, and can I work?
100% of the monthly IPREM, which is €600 a month, plus €450 for the first dependant and €300 for each additional one. And yes: since Real Decreto 1155/2024 came into force in May 2025, students may work up to 30 hours a week without a separate permit.
Which student visa documents need a sworn translation?
Most often: the admission or enrolment letter, prior degrees and transcripts, the criminal record certificate and, when requested, the medical certificate. Each consulate keeps its own list, so confirm it on the official website; we translate whatever you need.
Is a sworn translation in PDF enough for the consulate, or do I need paper?
We deliver the sworn translation as a digitally signed PDF, valid for online submission and accepted by most bodies. If your consulate or office requires paper, we also issue it on official Spanish stamped paper, hand-signed and sealed, and send it to you.
My criminal record has an apostille. Does that get translated too?
Yes. If you need the document apostilled, apostille the original first and then send it to us: the sworn translation also covers the text of the apostille, so you submit the complete set in Spanish.
How long does the sworn translation take?
It depends on the number of documents and words. When we send the quote we give you a specific turnaround, and if your appointment is close you can choose the 24-hour and same-day express option to speed up delivery.
Will this sworn translation also be valid in my home country?
A MAEC sworn translation is fully valid in Spain. For procedures before authorities in other countries you should check their requirements, as they may ask for a different type of certification or translator.
- Official sworn translation, in both directions, with full legal validity for procedures before official bodies in Spain
- Standard, urgent and express delivery options · Exact delivery date before paying
- Confidential handling of your documents
- Formal corrections included if the receiving authority requests them
