If you have lived in Canada during the last five years and are applying for a Spanish non-lucrative residence visa, a digital nomad visa or Spanish citizenship, your file must include a Canadian criminal record certificate. And here comes the first stumble: Canada issues two different types of check, and only one of them will get through a Spanish file without questions.
Name-based vs certified: the mistake that costs you a month
Your local police service can issue a name-based criminal record check: it runs your name and date of birth against the RCMP's national repository of criminal records. Fast and cheap — but with a structural flaw the RCMP itself acknowledges: without fingerprints, identity cannot be confirmed with certainty, so the RCMP does not certify the result.
The serious document is the certified criminal record check: your fingerprints are taken and processed by the RCMP's Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services (CCRTIS), which compares them against the fingerprints of everyone with a criminal record in Canada. It is the only check the RCMP issues as a certified official document — and, being a federal document, the one that gets apostilled without argument for use in Spain.
Rule: for visas and citizenship, always request the fingerprint-based certified check. A name-based letter from a local detachment risks being bounced back by the consulate or the immigration office in Spain.
How to apply from Spain (or anywhere abroad)
The RCMP does not accept applications mailed directly by individuals from abroad, and electronic fingerprint capture is not available outside Canada. The official route has two steps:
- Ink fingerprints on paper. An authorized agency in your country of residence — local police, or a fingerprinting service working with Canadian accredited firms — takes prints of all ten fingers in black ink on the fingerprint form (the classic RCMP C-216C). The form must show the agency's name and address and the signature of the official who took the prints.
- Submission through an RCMP-accredited company in Canada. There are no accredited companies outside Canada. The accredited company digitizes your paper prints and submits them electronically to CCRTIS. Never mail your fingerprints directly to the RCMP — the application will not be accepted.
If you are physically in Canada, it is simpler: local police or an accredited fingerprinting company, with digital capture on the spot.
Timelines: the RCMP publishes an official range of 3 to 120 business days, depending on whether there is a match to a criminal record and how much manual processing the file needs. With no record and electronic prints you sit at the short end; from abroad, with paper in the loop, budget several weeks.
The apostille: Global Affairs Canada since January 2024
Since 11 January 2024, the Hague Apostille Convention has been in force for Canada and the old chain of consular legalization is gone. The RCMP certificate is a federal document, so its apostille is issued by Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa — not by the province where you live or where your prints were taken. And the usual order applies: apostille first, sworn translation after, because the apostille is part of the document and is translated together with the certificate.
Validity: the clock starts at issuance
Spanish consulates require the criminal record certificate for residence visas to have been issued within the 3 months before the application. For other procedures the practice varies between offices — confirm the window with yours before ordering the certificate. The practical consequence is the same as with the FBI or ACRO certificates: synchronize the RCMP request, the Global Affairs Canada apostille and your appointment, because a flawless but expired certificate is a rejected certificate.

The sworn translation
The RCMP certificate arrives in English (or in French — the RCMP works in both of Canada's official languages). For the Spanish administration it needs a sworn translation by a translator accredited by the Spanish MAEC — a certified translation done in Canada is not valid in Spain.
