How long does a sworn translation take: standard, urgent and express turnaround
When a procedure's deadline is tight, the most common question is: how soon can it be ready? The short answer is between the same day and 2-3 business days, depending on the level of urgency, the volume and the format of the document. Here it is in detail so you can choose with confidence.
Standard turnaround: 2-3 business days
This is the reasonable timeframe for a normal sworn translation: the translator reviews the document, produces the translation, checks consistency with the original (seals, dates, proper names), formats the result so that it is recognisable alongside the original, signs with their physical or electronic stamp and delivers.
It is the recommended timeframe whenever there is no genuine urgency, because it leaves room for quality review and better handles the queries that may come up (transliterations, ambiguous dates, faint seals). For 1-3 pages of a standard document (birth certificate, criminal record, simple certificates), 2 business days is typical; for more complex documents (court rulings, deeds, long academic transcripts), 3 days.
Urgent 24h
When the procedure cannot wait, delivery within 24 working hours is the next level. It carries a surcharge over the standard price because the translator rearranges their schedule to fit it in and the review is done in a more concentrated block.
Typical cases for the urgent option:
- Immigration office appointment the next day.
- Criminal record certificate about to expire.
- Notary appointment scheduled in a few days.
- Forgotten documentation that surfaces at the last minute.
Express (same day, before 14:00)
The fastest level is same-day delivery, available when the order is confirmed before 14:00 Madrid time and on a business day. Past that hour, or on weekends and public holidays, "same day" is no longer feasible and the system proposes the next available level.
Express means working on the document right away, jumping the queue. That is why it carries the highest surcharge and is only offered for reasonable volumes (typically up to 3-4 pages). For larger volumes, "same day" is no longer technically possible and the 24-hour urgent option is the fastest available.
What can slow things down
Some situations add time regardless of the urgency level chosen:
- Poorly scanned or illegible document: the translator loses time deciphering seals, names and dates. If you upload a clear, sharp scan, the timeframe is respected.
- Very long document (full academic syllabi, court rulings, complete degree files): they inevitably require more work and review time.
- Document that needs prior OCR: images or PDFs without a text layer require an extra digitisation step before translation can start.

- Notarised signature: if your procedure requires the sworn translator's signature to be notarised (for example, to file the document abroad), add one extra business day for the trip to the notary.
